Rooft Session

Video Series | Soohye Jang | 2016, Seattle, WA

I am an expat in Seattle. An expat is an abbreviation of expatriate, a person temporarily or permanently residing, as an immigrant, in a country other than that of their citizenship. The word comes from the Latin terms ex (“out of”) and patria (“country, fatherland).

The world is my home, and I care for the community here in Seattle. My heart is not temporary for this community and this city. However, I have been feeling a distance. For the first time in my life, my identity was in crisis, too. So many people are suffering from social issues more than any other cities I call my home. Living between Central District and Capitol Hill, I witness the struggles of our homeless population, our LGBTQ community, our people of color, and our illegal immigrants. But through it all, I have found talents and warmth existing in the city.

Even with the fights, struggles and limitations as an expat, the only place I feel at home is my rooftop.

I wanted to share a story of real people I meet in this city, and invite people to express themselves as a HUMAN without any label on them.
